1. Why do we have to register online with the Archdiocese?

Answer: Online Registration is an Archdiocesan requirement. It not only sets the team rosters for intra parish play, but more importantly, proper online registration is a waiver liability to each of the parents to the Archdiocese. Online registration is required for Grades 1-8 students that play CYO sports and kids not registered before the first game are not eligible to play in any game. The Archdiocese spot checks the team rosters and those found in violation will forfeit their season. top

2. Do we need to submit the online Archdiocesan registration form with the SJE CYO registration form for every sport?

Answer: Yes! The online registration form mentioned above serves two purposes as described in the previous answer. Furthermore, the CYO registration form has medical and emergency contact information not covered in the SJE registration form. In the event of an emergency the coaches would turn to the registration form for instruction with respect to said emergencies (e.g., kids allergic to certain medications or bee stings). top

3. "What is our registration fee paying for?"

Answer: For inter-league play (i.e., where the teams play other parishes both competitive and noncompetitive), registration fees pay for the cost of registering teams in the Archdiocese, the cost of renting fields or gyms, and the cost of purchasing equipment for the different sports programs. For intra-league play (i.e., intramural programs and clinics), registration fees pay for equipments, prizes and other items that go towards running the activities. top

4. Why do fees increase every few years?

Answer: The CYO Board attempts to keep costs down but costs to run our programs increase almost every year. The Board tries to set registration fees at a level that covers our cost to register our teams. This cost of registering teams is set by the Archdiocese CYO and can increase at their discretion. While our registration fees cover most of our costs to register our teams, they do not cover the cost of fields/gyms, equipment, or uniforms.
For these extra expenses, we rely on two main income sources: intramural sports and fundraisers. Currently, we have several intramural sports and we run three main fundraisers (Spaghetti Dinner, Trivia Night and Anne Nalls Golf Tournament) each year. top

5. Is a child guaranteed team placement?

Answer: Every child that registers after the registration deadline will automatically be placed on the wait list. If team rosters allow for team placement, the child will be placed on the team. If the rosters are full, the child will remain on the wait list until a roster spot opens up. Registration fees will be reimbursed or credited to the next sports program if the child is not placed on a team. top

6. What is the evaluation process for choosing players for the A team and the B team?

Answer: For kids grades 3-8, the board organizes evaluations as required (i.e., in instances where there are enough kids to field two teams at the same level and gender, during tryouts for each of the respective sports). The kids are taken through drills that have a point scoring evaluation with each skill. Each evaluation also includes a simulated game type situation and each child will be evaluated on game skill, speed and knowledge. The results of this evaluation are tallied for each child and a committee meets to determine this evaluation for A and B team placement. Every child that registers by the registration deadline is guaranteed team placement.
The sports Commissioner seeks volunteers to serve as the sports evaluators. Generally speaking, evaluators will be either individuals who have either been involved in the sports program in the past and have an understanding of the sport or individuals who have volunteered to coach for the coming sports season. top

7. What are the playing (time) rules for CYO sports?

Answer: Answer: We will cover the major sports: As a CYO program we make every effort to assure fair playing time for all kids. However, for the competitive level sports, fair does not necessarily mean equal playing time. Our coaches are encouraged to consider the following when allocating playing time:
     • Athletic ability
     • Practice attendance
     • Attitude and participation.

The CYO sports rules follow:
Soccer:
     • Noncompetitive (Grades 1-4): Everyone must play one quarter and everyone must sit one quarter (numbers permitting).
     • Competitive Soccer (Grades 1-8): Everyone must play a portion of the game.

Basketball:
     • Intramurals (Grades 1-3): Everyone must play one quarter and everyone must sit one quarter (numbers permitting). 12 point/half/player limit.
     • Noncompetitive and Non-Tournament intra parish (Grade 4, Rookie): Everyone must play two quarters and everyone must sit two quarters.
     • Competitive Non-Tournament (Grades 5-8): Everyone must play one quarter and everyone must sit one quarter.
     • Competitive Tournament (Grades 5-8): Everyone must play a portion of the game.

Baseball/Softball:
     • Intramural (T-ball, softball): Everyone plays and everyone bats in each inning.
     • Non-competitive (Gr 3-4, Rookie): Every child is automatically in the batting order, and it’s mandatory that every child present at the game play one complete inning in the field defensively (3 outs).
     • Competitive (Gr 5-8: Varsity & JV - Each boy on the game time roster must play at least one half inning defensively and must come to bat at least once in a seven inning game. Rookies - Everyone must play two innings and sit one inning.

8. How are the gyms chosen for the Basketball season?

Answer: These guidelines are not hard and fast rules. They are also subject to gym availability. Gyms are chosen based on coaches schedules; the size of the gym (older kids get bigger gyms); time slots (older kids get later time slots); and proximity to the central location of St. John the Evangelist School. The younger the kids, the closer to St. John’s we try to keep them. Game locations are determined by the Archdiocese. top

9. What is the process for determining the winner of the annual Trippy and Schwab awards?

Answer: Starting in grade 5, the coach of every St. John the Evangelist team completes an evaluation form on every player on the team. The coach provides a score from 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest) for each of three categories. These categories are Christian Characteristics, Leadership, and Athletic Skill. The coaches provide comments for the each of the kids. These forms are collected and saved until the child is in grade 8.

At a spring Board meeting, the Board considers the scores and comments given to each eligible child (who has played five sport seasons or more) over the four year span (grades 5-8) by the different coaches of the various teams the child played on. In addition to the scores and comments provided by coaches, the Board also considers information on other extra-curricular activities for each child. Examples of these include Altar Server, non-St. John the Evangelist sports teams played on, Boy Scouts, and so on.

After reviewing the scores, comments and other information, each Board member submits a vote for the child that the board member feels best fulfills the criteria outlined above. The child with the highest number of votes wins the award.

10. Who are the members presently on the CYO Board?

Answer: Click on CYO Board to display the current board members. top

11. How can I become an SJE CYO Board member?

Answer: Interested parties need to contact a board member to inform them of their intention. The contacted party will make a presentation to nominate a potential new board member. The board will then vote to accept the new membership. A quorum and majority vote is required for acceptance. If accepted, the new board member will be notified and will be eligible to join the following board meeting. Every board member must hold a major job within the board. For a list of jobs, click on CYO Board. top

12. Who is the CYO liaison in the rectory? What is his purpose?

Answer: Fr. Tietjen is the current CYO liaison. His role is to make determinations for hardship cases. The CYO liaison also acts to help resolve conflicts in which the CYO board and external entities are at impasse. top

13. Do you have a CYO suggestion box?

Answer: Yes, it can be found in the school lobby by the gym doors. If you have any concerns, please drop a note in the suggestion box or e-mail CYO Board President. top
