Playing chess is great fun for both boys and girls, and it teaches skills that relate directly to other areas of a child's education. Through chess, children learn problem solving and critical thinking skills. They make decisions independently. They learn how to recognize patterns, analyze situations, and develop tactics. Chess also fosters improved concentration skills and good sportsmanship.
The Chess Club at St. John the Evangelist School is open to all 4th-8th grade students who are genuinely interested in learning and playing chess. The club meets weekly on Mondays from 3pm-4pm, starting in early October through mid-May. Signup is in Mid-September. There is an annual fee of $10 per student (or $20 per family) to help cover the cost of snacks and drinks.
Each class starts with ten minutes for a snack, then a short lesson or straight to the games. For members who are interested, this year we’re adding a competitive chess-ladder, where players earn higher ‘rungs’ on the ladder by winning games.
Note to Parents: If you wish to volunteer to help, we need volunteers to take attendance, set up and put away chess equipment, and serve snacks. While not required, it’s helpful if volunteers know the basics of playing chess to help the kids when questions arise. We’d be happy to teach you!
