Margaret Durney - Principal

Mrs. Durney received her BS from Washington Adventist University and her Masters from University of Maryland University College. She holds a Certificate of Advanced Study in Education (CASE) in Instructional Leadership, a program for experienced educators that integrates theory and practice; where educators enhance skills in leadership, curriculum, and pedagogy to meet the needs of future educational leadership.  In addition to her formal course work, Mrs. Durney has attended seminars and learning workshops in effective teaching, technology, administration, and safety and security.  She is a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Melissa Sloan - Assistant Principal

Melissa Sloan graduated with honors from The University of Scranton with a Bachelors of Science in Elementary Education, a Bachelors of Arts in Theology, and certification in Special Education and Elementary Education.  She also has a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership and Administration and a Master of Arts in Special Education Administration and Directorship. She has been with the Archdiocese of Washington for 15 years as a classroom teacher and most recently as a Director of Resource.  She has experience in special education, professional development, Responsive Classroom, differentiation, coaching teachers, mathematics education, and strategic planning.

Peggy Bilodeau - JrK Para-Educator

Mrs. Bilodeau is the part-time Preschool Para-educator for the Jr. Kindergarten Program.  She rejoined the staff in September 2017 and is very excited to once again be part of the Jr. Kindergarten Program at St. John the Evangelist. She maintains friendships within our community from her years as a St. John’s parishioner.  She and her husband, Jim, are the proud parents of four children and are active volunteers in their community, parish, and children’s schools.

Angela Colburn - Administrative Assistant & Medication Technician

Mrs. Colburn is a life member of St. John the Evangelist Parish. She is a graduate of St. John’s School, as are her three daughters.  She attended Montgomery College and majored in Business Administration.  She has held various positions at the school since 2006.  Mrs. Colburn is also one of the school’s medication technicians.

Joanne Cooke - Language Arts 5th & 6th grades; Religion 5th grade

In addition to her teaching credentials. Mrs. Cooke has her Master's degree and certification in Guidance and Counseling Education. She has taught 5th and 6th grade in Montgomery County and at St. Peter School in Olney, MD. She has piloted and implemented a grade-school enrichment program. Mrs. Cooke was  the Director of the Christian Service Commitment program at an area high school.

Marissa Debrot - 1st Grade

Ms. Debrot graduated from The Catholic University of America with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education.  She completed student teaching experiences in first through fourth grade classrooms throughout the Washington, D.C. area.  She also tutored first through fourth grade students through the DC Reads program during her time at CUA.  Ms. Debrot shines with her differentiation, classroom choice, and creative teaching methods that engage students and grow students' desire for learning and knowledge.

Jean Engler - 2nd Grade

Mrs. Engler attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania and graduated with a B.S. in Special Education. She began teaching first grade here in the early 1980s and later became the primary grades reading and math teacher. In the mid 1990s, she returned as a full-time second grade teacher, where she remains today. Mrs. Engler was St. John’s Teacher of the Year in 2006.

Milenka Gutierrez - Science 5th-8th Grade; Computers 5th & 6th Grade

Mrs. Gutierrez graduated from the University of Maryland with a B.S. in Neurobiology and Physiology. She has worked as a Sunday School teacher and as a Science and Math tutor, in grades ranging from middle school to college level.

John Higgins - 7th and 8th Grade Public Speaking


Mr. Higgins began teaching speech at St. John’s in 2012.  He is the grandfather of seven current students and graduates of the school.  Mr. Higgins is an attorney, retired from the National Labor Relations Board.  He currently teaches at Catholic University Law School and has taught there since 1982.

Carmita Jaramillo-Medina -Spanish, JrK- 8th Grade

Carmita Jaramillo Medina is from Ecuador where she attended Universidad Central del Ecuador and graduated as a Lawyer. She has been married for thirty years and has three daughters. Her family has been living in Montgomery County for more than twenty-five years. After Senora's second daughter started kindergarten, she began teaching her native language, Spanish, in private and public schools. She has continued teaching for more than 20 years. Throughout the years, Senora has had the opportunity to work with children of different origins and ages (from four to eighteen-year-olds). She loves working at SJE and hopes to continue teaching Spanish here for many years to come.

Kristin Maloney - Band Director

Ms. Maloney is a graduate of the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam where she earned a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and a Bachelor of Arts in History.  She began teaching band in the Archdiocese of Washington in 2002.  Ms. Maloney has been selected twice to conduct the Archdiocesan Honors Band.

Linda Maurano, RN, BSN, MSN – School Delegating Nurse

Mrs. Maurano has worked for the Children’s Home Health Care Agency, the Children’s National Medical Center Child Ventures, Inc., Medstar Home Health, Capital Hospice, and Holy Cross Home Care and Hospice. She is certified as a delegating nurse which means she can train our medication technicians here at school.  In additional to making sure SJE meets all State and county requirements, Mrs. Maurano oversees our clinic and its procedures.

Caitlin McNickle - 4th Grade

Ms. McNickle attended Loyola University Maryland where she received her Bachelors of Art in Elementary Education with a minor in Special Education. She has student teaching experiences from first grade to fifth grade in schools throughout Baltimore.

Marci McNickle - Bookkeeper/Receptionist/Medication Technician

Mrs. McNickle has worked with the Archdiocese of Washington since 2003 in various positions. She is bilingual in English and Spanish.  She is also a Medication Technician and an Extended School Program aide.

Kevin McTighe - Physical Education, JrK - 8th Grade

An avid sportsman, Mr. McTighe attended Rockville High School where he played football, basketball, and baseball. His love of sports continued at Montgomery College, and while there he played centerfield and pitcher for the school’s baseball team. After two years, he transferred to the University of Maryland, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology.

Tina Niglio - Director of Extended School Program; Primary Para-educator; Medication Technician

Mrs. Niglio is a familiar face to our St. John the Evangelist community as a long-term parishioner, former school parent, and employee of the Rectory.  She is the Director of the school's after care program.

Claire North - Resource Teacher

Mrs. North graduated from Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College) with a B.A. in History and certification in Elementary Education. She received her M.A. in Curriculum from Loyola College, Baltimore, and has completed many programs for a variety of learning disabilities. She was a classroom teacher for 13 years before joining our staff as a part-time resource teacher.  Currently, Mrs. North serves pre-K through third grade students, identifying and supporting students with special learning needs.

Stephen O'Shaughnessy - Social Studies 5th-8th grades; 6th grade homeroom; Computers 1st-4th grades

Stephen O'Shaughnessy graduated from Salisbury University with a Bachelors of Science in History, a Bachelors of Arts in Secondary Education, and certification in Social Studies and English Education. He also has a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership and Administration from Marymount University’s Catholic School Leadership Program with certifications in Admin I/II. He has been with Catholic Schools for 12 years as a classroom teacher and administrator, most recently as a principal at St. Philip the Apostle in Camp Springs, Maryland.  He has experience in data driven instruction, professional development, Responsive Classroom, differentiation, coaching teachers, school accreditation, Universal Design for Learning, Blended Learning, and strategic planning.

Emily Pacconi - Language Arts 7th & 8th grades; Religion 8th grade

Ms. Pacconi graduated from John Carroll University with a B.A. in Education with a minor Social Studies and Language Arts. She is currently working toward her Masters. She was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA and moved to the area to work at St. John the Evangelist.

Jacklyn Price - Counselor 

jprice@sjte.orgMrs. Price was born and raised in Mentor, Ohio near the city of Cleveland. She graduated from Canisius College in Buffalo, New York, with a degree in special education and elementary education. While at Canisius, she volunteered at the Big Brother/Big Sister program for the city of Buffalo. She earned a Master of Education in School Counseling from Loyola University Maryland. Jackie taught in the Howard County Public School System as a Special Educator for 8 ½ years and 1 year as a School Counselor before joining the Archdiocese of Washington. She currently is the Technology Teacher and School Counselor at St. Andrew Apostle School and has been a member of their staff since 2016. She holds an Advanced Professional II certificate in Elementary Education 1-6, Generic Special Education 1-8 and School Counseling. She also is a National Board Certified Counselor and is a member of the Maryland School Counseling Association and the American School Counseling Association. Jackie lives in Silver Spring/Wheaton area with her husband Andrew, and son, Lincoln.

Stephanie Rico - Art, K-8th grades

Mrs. Rico initiated the school’s formal art program. She graduated from the University of Maryland with B.A. degrees in Studio Art and Art History. She also pursued graduate studies while at the University of Maryland. In 1993, she founded Art Horizons. This program is currently offered as an after-school enrichment program at St. John the Evangelist.

Maureen Rossi - Resource Teacher

Mrs. Rossi attended Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature with minors in both Political Science and Latin. She has taken classes towards her Master of Arts in Teaching from Notre Dame University of Maryland. Mrs. Rossi taught at another Archdiocesan school for six years.

Margaret Ruppert - Music, JrK-8th grades

Mrs. Ruppert graduated from the State University of New York at Buffalo with a B.A. in Music. She studied in Madrid for a year and was a volunteer music teacher at the American School of Madrid. Mrs. Ruppert has been a music teacher, parishioner, and cantor at St. John the Evangelist for over 25 years.

Marilyn Whitney - Director, Junior Kindergarten

Mrs. Whitney graduated from Frostburg State University with a major in Political Science. She became our part-time primary reading and math teacher in 2008 and is currently the director of our junior kindergarten program. Mrs. Whitney has also taught kindergarten and grade 1 library, kindergarten art, and coordinated the school’s marketing efforts.

Debra Zajac - Co-Teacher and Para-Educator, Junior Kindergarten

Mrs. Zajac has been involved in school activities since her oldest child began attending in 1996. She is a co-teacher in our Junior Kindergarten program.

Colleen Zarzecki - Librarian; Religion 6th & 7th grades

Mrs. Zarzecki graduated from the University of Dallas with a B.A. in English Literature.  She received an M.Phil. degree in Anglo-Irish Literature from Trinity College, University of Dublin in Ireland and completed coursework and qualifying examinations for the Ph.D. in English Literature from the George Washington University.  Mrs. Zarzecki worked for four years in a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services library and for more than a decade in the Office of Information Systems of the Administration for Children and Families.  She has worked as a writer and grant researcher for Lumen Catechetical Consultants and has taught in a variety of settings in St. John the Evangelist parish, including the Children's Liturgy of the Word, Vacation Bible School, and Religious Education.  Both of Mrs. Zarzecki's daughters have attended SJE since preschool; one graduated from SJE in 2018 and the other will graduate in 2021.

IHM Sisters

Sister Doreen Willis, IHM - Kindergarten

Sister Doreen has been teaching in the primary grades for 47 years and taught first grade for 27 years and kindergarten for 20 years. She has a B.A. in Education with a minor in Special Education from Marywood University and an M.S. in Reading Education from Marywood University. Sister Doreen is also a certified reading specialist.

Sr Roberta Harding, IHM - Pastoral Associate, DRE

Sister Roberta earned her B.A. in Elementary and Special Education and her M.S. in Reading Education from Marywood University. She also holds a certificate in Peer Guidance and Spiritual Direction. For two decades, Sister Roberta has guided sacramental preparation for the youth in our school and parish. She prepares new parents for baptism and coordinates programs for the Sacraments of Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation.
