PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT AND INFORMATION

St. John the Evangelist School administrators and faculty believe that parents are the primary educators of their children.  Your choice of enrolling your children in our school indicates your faith that we will help guide your children’s awareness of their unique value as children of God and begin to identify and develop their talents during their elementary years.  We strive for both the development of our students’ academic abilities and the formation of Christian ideals and values.

At St. John the Evangelist School, we are proud of our parental involvement, which has been given over the years in the true Christian spirit.  We continue to encourage that spirit. Parent volunteers are essential to the successful operation of the school and education of our students.

FUNDRAISING AND VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Each year the Home and School Association (HSA) raises funds to help cover the school operating expenses. Each SJE family with children in grades K-8 is required to contribute a minimum of $370 per year. The amount that is credited toward a family's $370 minimum fundraising obligation varies by fundraiser as noted below. Families may choose to make a direct contribution to the school and/or participate in the fundraising activities described below. In addition to raising funds, these activities are a great way to meet fellow parents of the SJE-Parish community and build long-lasting friendships. Contact the point of contact (POC) listed for additional information about the fundraiser.

HSA Fundraising Activities
Fundraising opportunities to whittle away that $370 Family Obligation. A portion of these activities will count toward your family fundraising obligation. Click here Fundraising Toward the Family Obligation [PDF]

General HSA Fundraising Activities
Volunteers are needed for all of these activities. These events and programs are a great way for the school to raise money and help keep tuition costs down, but they DO NOT affect the individual family fundraising obligation of $370 per year. Click here General Fundraising Opportunities [PDF].

Volunteer Opportunities
There are so many fun ways to become involved in St. John the Evangelist School! There are a number of ongoing programs which require the support of parent volunteers. Click here for more information on SJE School Volunteer Opportunities [PDF] and here for Additional HSA information.

For the protection of all of our children, SJE policy follows the Archdiocese of Washington Child Protection Program, VIRTUS. Parents and guardians must be cleared through VIRTUS in order to serve as chaperones on field trips, attend class parties and functions at school, and volunteer for extracurricular activities such as Scouting and CYO.

Step 1:  Create a Virtus account at   www.Virtus.org.

Step 2: Sign up for a Virtus Safe Environment training session.

Safe Environment training class must be completed within 60 days of Fingerprinting.

Step 3: Read the Child Protection Policy booklet and sign a copy of your acknowledgment from the training session. Return to the Coordinator (Marci McNickle).

Step 4: Fill out an application.  Return application with two forms of identification to Coordinator (Marci McNickle).

Step 5: Coordinator will provide a document with the ADW fingerprint authorization number and location.

Bring authorization form for fingerprinting to one of the fingerprinting locations, along with two forms of identification.

Bring the copy of your fingerprint receipt back to the Coordinator (Marci McNIckle).

She will follow up with ADW when they have posted to your account.

If you believe you have completed everything that needs to be done, please follow up with the Coordinator (Marci McNickle) for final clearance before volunteering.

Thank you for all you do for keeping SJE in compliance.

SCHOOL UNIFORMS

Uniforms are worn daily by children in PreKindergarten-3 through Grade 8, except on special non-uniform days (tag days). Tag days are sometimes used as fundraisers by school clubs for specific charities, as prizes or rewards, or as holiday recognition. Uniform requirements are detailed in the School Policy Book.

Please make sure you are using the uniform list for St. John the Evangelist Silver Spring as there is also another St. John the Evangelist listed in MD. For product and pricing information online, visit Flynn & O’Hara at http://www.flynnohara.com and register on the website to find school specific information. The school code is MD185.

St. John the Evangelist’s Used Uniform Boutique offers gently used uniforms. The availability of uniforms is completely dependant upon donations and we can not guarantee that specific sizes or items will be available. Contact the school office for more information.

Children should not arrive at school before 7:50 a.m.  Since the school has no way of supervising students before that time (unless students are in the Before Care program), it cannot be held responsible for children who come before the appointed time.  Students are to wait on the playground until the bell rings or are otherwise directed (see School Policy Book for complete details).

At that time, they form lines and enter the building by means of the classroom doors.  Students not on the playground when the bell rings at 8:00 are tardy and must report to the office for a late slip.

EMERGENCY CLOSING AND PROCEDURES

St. John the Evangelist School bases its emergency and weather-related closings on Montgomery County’s announcements. Our school will always be a two-hour delayed opening for any Montgomery County announced late openings.  All students, therefore, should be here by 10:00 a.m. The Before School Care Program will begin at 8:00 a.m. on days with delayed opening.

Thus, if Montgomery County announces:

St. John the Evangelist will:

School closing for the entire day

Close school for the entire day

Delayed openings (any hour)

Delay school two hours (10am report)

Early dismissal after 12:30 p.m.

Dismiss school same time as Montgomery County

Please contact the school if you are unable to pick up your child at the altered time and another parent will pick up your child. There will be NO After Care program on early dismissal days.  Also, on delayed openings days, any parent who needs or wishes to have their child(ren) come in early for our early morning care program is always welcomed to do so.

The Montgomery County School System announces weather closures on local radio and television stations and other media including the Montgomery County Public Schools home page. The MCPS home page immediately displays emergency announcements (in bold red letters at the top of the page) when appropriate. If there are no announcements in bold red letters, there are no emergency closings or delays.
